Proper Packing, Part II:

Ridgewood Moving Services presents Part II of our “Proper Packing” series. Part I focused on early organizational steps and the materials you’ll need to pack. We’d now like to bring your attention to other important issues associated with your move.

General tips for wrapping your precious items:

  • Use your old clothes if you need to. Worn out blankets and towels are as soft as they are effective for wrapping precious items and securing them for the trip.

  • Use bubble wrap, paper, or other protective materials for any breakable or questionably fragile objects. Also consider boxing these items independently of the rest so that they receive the proper attention. Label them appropriately so all moving company personnel are aware of their frailty. (Note: a good moving service will always take good care of every box or item in transit. “Packing smart,” however, means being proactive with your possessions and helping to avoid accidents.)

  • Be careful with newspaper especially if it’s freshly printed. Newspaper can leave ink on your items so be sure to either use older paper (which will have dried) or only use newspaper to cushion stuff that’s wrapped otherwise. Paper bags are decent if you want to cover an item first then wrap the exterior in newspaper.

Start the packing process:

  • Lump your items into different areas around the house. This will allow you to sit down with a few boxes at a time and carefully wrap and store your boxes for the move. Basic organization, even room-by-room, will give you the advantage when you start the hard work of boxing things up.

  • Don’t overload boxes. Avoid putting too much in boxes. This is particularly easy if you’re packing lots of books; paper is heavy and adds up fast.

  • Be aware of box strength and consider how strong the bottom panel of each box is. The last thing you want is to fill your box and have it split in your hands while you move it out of the room.

  • Strategically position your boxes so you have room in your house to move and “avenues” to navigate. This will make your life easier while you wait for the moving crew and it will make their job easier when they can quickly funnel everything out the door.
